Update – January 10th - Temporary measures

Despite the fact that Portugal is an example with the high vaccination rate of 89% ensuring a reduced number of new cases and a death toll close to zero, there are some new temporary measures in place with the goal of protecting the health of all those who visit and live in Portugal.

A negative Covid-19 test (RT-PCR or antigen) is required for all passengers arriving into Portugal by air, sea or land, regardless of the destination of origin and vaccination status.
The arrival areas at the airports will be closed, so it is possible that you may have to meet your driver outside.

A vaccination certificate or a negative covid-19 test (autotest, antigen or PCR) must be presented when accessing hotels, restaurants, gyms, thermal and spa facilities, as well as to attend cultural events. For big events, sports events or events without arranged seats it is required to present a negative covid-19 test (autotest, antigen or PCR);

Can I Travel to Portugal?

Portugal is looking forward to welcoming visitors from all over the world! Our people are known for its hospitality and you will feel welcome and at home around the country. You can visit Portugal if you are coming from the European Union, from a country in Schengen Area, Australia, Brazil, Canada, Chile, China, South Korea, Jordan, Kuwait, New Zealand, Qatar, Rwanda, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, Taiwan, Ukraine, Uruguay, United Arab Emirates, United Kingdom, United States of America and special administrative regions of Hong Kong and Macao.

What do I need if visiting Portugal Mainland?

Visitors aged 12 or older must have a negative Covid-19 test (RT-PCR or antigen) for all arrivals into Portugal, either by air, sea or land, regardless of the destination of origin and vaccination card, made until 48 hours prior to the arrival time. All passengers need to fill a Passenger Locator Card before departure to Portugal.

And what about Madeira?

Visitors must have proof of vaccination (different official certificates accepted for Janssen, AstraZeneca, Moderna or Pfizer vaccines) or recovery of the disease or the EU Covid Digital Certificate. Alternatively, visitors can also present a negative RT-PCR COVID-19 test taken 72 hours prior to departure (check the timings at the laboratory). To speed the process on arrival, the Regional Government of Madeira suggests travelers complete a health questionnaire between 48 and 12 hours prior to disembarking. The Regional government offers each visitor a free PCR test, which can either be taken upon your arrival at the airport or prior to your departure and return home. More information here: http://www.visitmadeira.pt/en-gb/useful-info/corona-virus-(covid-19)/information-to-visitors-(covid-19).

And the Azores?

People aged 12 or older visiting the Azores must present a negative RT- PCR test carried out 72h prior to the departure. All tests made for travels to the Azores at a network of laboratories with agreement with the Regional Government of the Azores will be paid the Regional Government. After scheduling your test, you should appear at the laboratory at the time and date established and follow the information that was given to you. Travelers who wish to remain in the Azores for more than seven days, will be required to test again on the 6th day. To speed the process on arrival, the Regional Government of the Azores suggests travelers complete a health questionnaire at least 72 hours before disembarking.

Can I Visit Spain?

Yes, the land borders between Portugal and Spain are open and circulation is permitted freely. If you are returning to Portugal it is necessary to present a negative Covid-19 test (RT-PCR or antigen) at the border.

What do I need when returning home?

If you are a holder of an EU Covid Digital Certificate you can fast track this at the airport when returning. (Check for additional official restrictions from your country with your airline). Tourists returning to the United States, ages two years and older, must provide a negative COVID-19 viral test taken one day prior to reentry.

What If I am arriving from Portugal and departing from Spain?

You will need to present a negative Covid-19 test (Antigen or PCR) to enter Portugal. You can cross the land borders from Portugal to Spain freely, but, according to the return requirements in your country, you may have to perform another covid-19 test before returning home. US tourists are welcome to Portugal as long as they present a negative Covid-19 test, either RT-PCR taken 72h prior to your flight or a rapid antigen test taken 48h prior, and they can depart from Spain and enter the US if they have a negative Covid-19 test taken one day prior to reentry.

And the other way round?

Before entering Spain, all travelers must fill out a Health Control Form available here: https://www.spth.gob.es/. All US and UK citizens on leisure travel are required to present proof of vaccination to enter Spain. See specific arrival requirements in Spain here. Despite the fact that land borders between Spain and Portugal are open, you will have to present a negative Covid-19 test (Antigen or PCR) on the border and another before departing from Portugal back home. Should you fly to Portugal from Spain, you will need to take at least a rapid antigen test (TRAg) 48h prior to your flight to enter the country.
